Keeping the dealer and customer feedback in mind, Kawasaki has retained all the equipment and design characteristics of the normal Z900 in the A2 version. The only change is the engine output. It stands at 95 PS at 8,500 rpm and 91.2 Nm at 6,500 rpm. This is in line with the demands of A2 compliance. The A2 version makes 30 PS and 7.4 Nm less than the normal Z900. The engine can also be adjusted to provide a maximum of 35kW (47.5 PS), again to comply with A2 restrictions and the needs of motorcycle training schools.
To make the change in power, one has to take the bike to an authorised Kawasaki dealer for an adjustment to the ECU. The adjustment is neither time consuming or irreversible. So when the time comes, it is possible to revert to 70kW again via a short visit to the authorised dealer who will also create and update a record of the status of the machine. Commenting on the launch, Morihiro Ikoma, Director of Kawasaki Motors Europe, said:
Soon after the Z900 was launched we began work on an A2 compliant version. The design brief from potential customers and dealers was a unified voice; keep the look, soul and ethos of the Z900 and create an A2 compliant version to open the world of Refined Raw Z to yet more enthusiastic riders. At 948cc this A2 compliant Z900 is bound to become one of the most appealing A2 offerings in the market.
The Kawasaki Z900 A2 variant uses the same 948cc in-line four DOHC engine with liquid cooling and fuel injection. The powerplant works in tandem with a 6-speed transmission. For suspension, the front features 41 mm inverted fork with compression and rebound damping and spring preload adjustability. The rear is a horizontal Back-link monoshock with rebound damping and spring preload adjustability. Brakes include dual 300 mm front discs and a single 250 mm rear disc, both with ABS.
The bike is available in two colours: Pearl Mystic Grey with Metallic Flat Spark Black; and Candy Persimmon Red with Metallic Spark Black.
