Six laps of the Slovakia Ring, the first of which to get to know the layout, the following four at a fast pace and the last, at a slower pace, to cool the engine and tires, followed by another 70 km of road, marked the beginning of the rehearsals of the new Honda Civic Type R, in Slovakia. It was a short experience, to be sure, but the first contact on the track behind the wheel of the Type R exceeded expectations. Fast and very nervous, as is customary in front-wheel-drive sports cars, neither the behavior nor the temperament of Honda's new 2.0-litre VTEC turbocharged gasoline engine disappoints.
On the road, the case changes shape. Although the ease of driving is not at issue, the 310hp on the front axle and the radical nature of the model itself suggest some care in everyday use.
Baptized by those responsible for the brand as the "racing car for the road", this fourth generation of the Honda Civic Type R is, according to the Japanese manufacturer, the Type R model with the most radical engine and the highest performance ever made.
Among other developments, the Type R's engine benefits, for the first time in its history, from supercharging. The peak power of the new VTEC turbo unit is 310hp at 6,500rpm ("redline" at 7,000rpm), and the maximum torque is at 400Nm at 2,500rpm. These values are higher than any model in the Type R line and beat all competition in the segment.
Coupled with a six-speed manual transmission (only option), with short, very short ratios, such as the gear lever (40mm), the Type R takes just 5.7 seconds from 0-100km/h and reaches the top speed of 270km/h.
The new model is characterized by a very sporty and extroverted exterior appearance, close to the WTCC version - large rear wing, four exhaust outlets, a whole set of projections and openings designed to improve aerodynamics and performance and specific tires developed by Continental.
The Type R's interior is also very sporty, with aluminum elements and wide bucket seats, but with short side supports so as not to make driving difficult. All safety equipment and the Honda Connect connectivity system are standard.
