It's been nearly a decade since Mazda last introduced a new CX-5, its best-selling model. But even with a new CX-50 model, a smaller CX-30, and a larger CX-70/CX-90 in the lineup, the CX-5 continues to be Mazda's most popular vehicle. Now, it's finally time to be replaced.

The 2026 Mazda CX-5 makes its long-awaited debut, and it brings with it some hotly-anticipated improvements over its second-generation predecessor.

This latest CX-5 is larger than the outgoing model, stretching by 4.5 inches with a wheelbase that's three inches longer. It's also a half-inch wider. These dimensional changes deliver more passenger space, though Mazda says the CX-50 is still the superior option for cargo volume. A much-improved cabin now features a giant touchscreen, ditching Mazda's rotating knob controller.

The Kodo design language has been evolved to make the CX-5 look more like the CX-70 and CX-90. Available 19-inch wheels convey a premium look, as does the new front end with a fresh Signature Wing grille. A familiar four-cylinder engine will carry over for the 2026 model, but Mazda mentions that a hybrid powertrain will join the lineup in 2027. Are Mazda's changes enough to keep the CX-5 a bestseller? And will it be able to challenge the hottest crossover in the class, the Toyota RAV4?

We wanted to keep the CX5's positioning as a sophisticated driver's SUV for customers who have a design affinity and want a smaller, sportier interpretation. We have listened to our customers and what kind of evolution they want. They want a larger vehicle, something bolder and sportier, and they want to have the latest technology."– Stefan Meisterfeld, VP of Strategic Planning for Mazda North American Operations.

Keeping The CX-5 Luxurious

Mazda has recently positioned itself as a premium mainstream brand, and the new CX-5's cabin fits in nicely with that billing. The cabin looks nicely appointed, and should be one of the more luxurious options in its segment. Mazda took customer and media feedback to heart, and ditched the poorly-reviewed rotating knob. A new 15.6-inch touchscreen takes its place, looking awfully similar to the one in the Chinese-market EZ-6. This new infotainment system still features wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but adds built-in Google technology with connected features. Customers can access the Google Play Store to download apps and customers their experience.

"Customers want larger screens," Meisterfeld told CarBuzz. "The technology has evolved, and we believe we can provide the touchscreen experience with the same Mazda safety philosophy. There are multiple ways to provide input to the vehicle: with the steering wheel, with voice, and also with the large touchscreen."

Owners also told Mazda they wanted more space, so the company increased the CX-5's size and added larger door openings. We don't have full specifications yet, but Mazda touts a "notably larger and more useful rear cargo area" that's almost two inches longer and more than an inch taller. In the back seat, legroom, knee room, and headroom are all improved. The CX-5 also gains a panoramic moonroof for the first time, as well as new seven-color ambient lighting.

A Long Wait For The Hybrid

At launch, the 2026 CX-5 will only be available with one engine: a carryover 2.5-liter SkyActiv-G four-cylinder producing 187 horsepower and 185 lb-ft of torque. As before, this engine is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission to standard i-Activ all-wheel-drive. We were hoping for at least an eight-speed transmission, but this powertrain is proven and well-loved by customers.

The more intriguing option is the upcoming Mazda Hybrid System, which is being developed in-house, unlike the Toyota-developed system in the CX-50 Hybrid. The MHS will use a new SkyActiv-Z engine that promises a higher level of power and fuel economy. In fact, Mazda is so confident in its new hybrid system, it will replace the outgoing CX-5 Turbo.

There is just one problem here; the CX-5 Hybrid won't go on sale until 2027. We should get more details about pricing closer to launch, but it may be a while before Mazda shares any more information about the CX-5 Hybrid.
