A New Toyota FJ Cruiser Could Debut Very Soon
Rumors surrounding the return of the Toyota FJ Cruiser have been around for years, and that's because Toyota has a habit of teasing rugged concepts that channel the spirit of the original.

From the Compact Cruiser EV concept to design patents, Toyota has kept people guessing since the retro-styled Land Cruiser officially bowed out in 2022. Some reports have even gone so far as to suggest which engine might power the comeback model. Now, the speculation has reached a new peak – a specific launch date has reportedly surfaced.

According to Japanese publication Mag-X, Toyota will preview a new Land Cruiser FJ during an exclusive event called "Japan Mobility Show Prologue" on October 20, 2025. The global debut will reportedly happen the following day. The publication describes it as the "youngest member" of the Land Cruiser family – a compact, boxy SUV that channels the design of the old FJ Cruiser while integrating modern Toyota styling. However, the model will not be part of Toyota's official booth at the Japan Mobility Show.

Expectations May Become A Reality Soon
At this stage, it's best to approach the reports with some caution. Toyota has not confirmed any information, and the company has a track record of keeping projects tightly under wraps. That said, existing leaks and filings give us a fair idea of what to expect. A design patent submitted to the Philippine Intellectual Property Office in early 2024 (but discovered just this year) depicted a compact SUV with styling heavily inspired by the Compact Cruiser EV concept.

Other reports claim that the upcoming FJ Cruiser will ride on Toyota's IMV-0 ladder-frame platform, shared with the Hilux Champ sold in Southeast Asia. The platform supports multiple powertrain setups, such as hybrid and full-electric, but Toyota appears to be starting with a simpler approach: a combustion engine. In that regard, the IMV-0 is an ideal foundation for all the off-roader's intent and purposes.

Take This With A Touch Of Salt For Now
Under the hood, a more recent report claimed that Toyota will equip the returning FJ Cruiser with a 2.7-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder gasoline engine, the same one used in the Land Cruiser Prado sold outside North America. This setup would make sense for markets in Asia and developing regions where simplicity and durability are priorities. Meanwhile, a hybrid or alternative powertrain could arrive later if Toyota decides to bring the model to the US or other regions with stricter emissions standards.

For now, fans should keep expectations measured. The latest reports are credible but unverified, and Toyota could still adjust its schedule or presentation plans. If the October 21 world premiere proves accurate, however, the wait will be really brief. We could be days away from the long-speculated return of the FJ Cruiser, finally stepping into the spotlight.
