Mercedes-AMG has showcased its concept four-door coupe, the Mercedes-AMG GT Concept, at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show.

The Mercedes-AMG GT is the brand's third autonomously developed sports car. The Panamericana grille with vertical ribs painted red on the sides dominates the front fascia. The new slim main headlamps and the side air gills flank the grille. The headlights are LED and the DRLs feature "Nano active fibre technology" which lends a three-dimensional illumination effect.

The car is draped in a hot red paint shade developed with a unique formulation for lustrousness. The rear features a wide carbon fibre diffuser and a centrally arranged tailpipe a la Mercedes-AMG GT R. Aerodynamic miniature cameras, known as mirror cams replace conventional exterior rear view mirrors. The roof, front spoiler, the rear diffuser and the side sill panels are all high-quality, lightweight carbon fibre.

The GT Concept features an EQ Power+ hybrid drive system. It includes a combination of a 4.0 litre V8 biturbo petrol engine with a high-performance electric motor. The power output of this system stands at 815.7 PS, and a 0-100 kmph sprint takes less than three seconds. The car has a balanced axle load distribution and fully variable AMG performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system with torque vectoring.

The energy storage unit is more powerful than conventional hybrid batteries, but at the same time more compact and lighter. Mercedes-AMG says the battery system is modular and scalable so that the performance and capacity of the battery can be adjusted to meet specific requirements of customers or certain markets. The battery charges via regenerative braking as well as by using the petrol engine if the charge drops below a particular threshold value.

There are three operating modes which one can select via the electric drive unit: pure electric, or only with the combustion engine, or the optimal combination of both drive sources as a hybrid.
